It all got rolling in a red wagon on TV…
One day while promoting her third book, Backyard Roughing It Easy, Dian appeared on NBC’s Today Show. She showed Tom Brokaw how to improvise a barbecue in a child’s red wagon. Dian helped him cook a hamburger on a foil-covered flat nosed shovel, and cook hot dogs on a clean pitchfork. She declared, “No one would ever forget a backyard barbecue with food cooked on a pitchfork.” Then Tom asked, “What would happen if your friends were drunk and came over and sat on your wagon?” Without missing a beat, she looked at Tom and said, “Well, you will just have ‘rump roast!’” At that moment, the whole studio broke out in laughter.
Afterward, Dian talked to Tom and pitched the idea of doing a regular segment for family fun on the show. He accepted, and soon Dian had a regular job on NBC’s Today Show that lasted eight years. During her time on the show, she presented hundreds of creative ideas for families and became known as “America’s First Lady of Creativity.”
From those many popular presentations, Dian wrote three additional books (Today’s Tips for Easy Living, Fun at Home with Dian Thomas and Holiday Fun Year-Round) featuring clever activities and projects that were perfect for families of all sizes.
