If starting a charcoal fire stresses you out, you’re not alone. But there’s more than one way to light a fire. Here are four solid methods that work every time.

1. Classic Lighter Fluid Method

  • Pile briquets into a pyramid.
  • Spray evenly with lighter fluid (never douse).
  • Wait 30 seconds and light with a match.

2. Electric Starter

  • Place starter underneath a pile of briquets.
  • Plug it in and let it heat for 8–10 minutes.
  • Unplug and remove once coals are glowing.

3. DIY Chimney Can

  • Take a coffee can and punch holes in the bottom.
  • Fill with briquets and newspaper.
  • Light the paper and let the heat rise.

4. Commercial Chimney Starter

  • Fill the top chamber with briquets.
  • Light paper in the bottom.
  • Coals will be ready in 10–15 minutes.

Pro Tip: Avoid self-lighting briquets if you want clean, chemical-free flavor.
