Journey into the Rainforest

On one of my most memorable adventures, I traveled deep into the Amazon rainforest—so far that the only way to reach the village was by boat. The air was thick with the scent of jungle greenery, and the river stretched out like a ribbon of chocolate milk beneath our little vessel. When we finally arrived, I was greeted not by the roar of engines or flicker of city lights, but by the sounds of birds, laughter, and the warm curiosity of local children.

These villages had no electricity. In fact, there was only one small generator in the entire community, just powerful enough to run a single television. I was told that when the village’s one show came on, all 250 residents would gather together, shoulder to shoulder, just to watch. It was a beautiful example of simplicity and togetherness.

The Gift of a Sloth’s Hug

One day, the children surprised me with something I’ll never forget—a sloth. Not a toy or a picture, but a real, live sloth that wrapped its long limbs gently around my arm and nestled in like we were old friends. In this part of the Amazon, it’s not unusual for children to have sloths as pets. They would carry them like babies, with incredible tenderness. Their generosity touched me deeply—they didn’t hesitate to share their special companions with a stranger from a faraway world.

A World Apart

I’ll never forget the moment I asked a woman in the village, through my guide, if she had ever heard of the United States. She paused for a long time, squinting thoughtfully. After what felt like a full minute, she looked up and said, “I’ve heard of it.” That was it. Just three simple words that made it clear: I was a guest in a place so remote, so untouched by the modern world, that even the concept of my homeland was distant and vague.

And yet, the connection I felt with the people there—especially through the children and their sloth friends—was powerful and immediate. In that moment, surrounded by rainforest and joy, it didn’t matter where we came from. All that mattered was the warmth of a smile and the gentle embrace of a sloth.
