With the economy a challenge, many people do not have enough extra money to go on a vacation.  I remember in the early nineties when I was on ABC’s Home Show, I did a show that addresses this very need.

We took a map of the United States and pinned it onto a corkboard.  During the show I was blind folded and given a flag with a pin in it to go and pin on the map.  It was just like pinning the tail on the donkey.

After I was blindfolded and turned around few times, I headed for the map of the US and put the pin in Memphis, Tennessee.  I then drew a seventy-five mile radius around Memphis and that was the area I was going to take a selected family on vacation for a week.  The parents took the week off work and for the following week we created an incredible vacation on a shoestring.  Every day we were out and about.  Some dinners were out but most were at home on the barbeque to save money.  The goal was to have time off, be with the family, and enjoy new and exciting things right in your own backyard.

Last weekend I was invited to a ski resort to take the gondola to the top of the mountain and have lunch with a group of 13 people visiting from Japan.  Up to that point I had never heard of the gondola or the wonderful ride to that top of the alpine mountain.  After the event was over I said to myself, that was a great day vacation.

Here are a few ideas to go to find some new places to visit right in you own area.

  1. Check out the website for your area.
  2. Ask your friends for new and exciting places to visit.
  3. If you have a visitor’s bureau call and tell them you will be visiting the area for vacation and see what they recommend.

I  would like to share with you my favorite place to visit during the summer, and when I do I say I have had the best vacation day.
