Foam, which can be purchased at most craft and some fabric stores, is a versatile material that can be used for making delightful Halloween costumes of many kinds. Here are two “foam” costumes that go together like . . . well . . . a burger and fries.

Hamburger Costume

Materials Needed:

Foam pieces:

  • 2 24-inch circles of 2-inch foam (for the bun)
  • 1 24-inch by 24-inch square of ½-inch foam (for the cheese)
  • 1 20-inch circle of ½-inch foam (for the tomato)
  • 1 roughly cut circle of ½-inch foam (for the lettuce)
✔ Spray paint: Golden brown, light brown, red, yellow, and green
    ✔ Contact cement (for gluing)
✔ 1 yard of 1 ½-inch wide cotton webbing (for shoulder straps)
✔ Brown sweat suit, or tights & leotard (to wear underneath)

Paint the foam pieces appropriately. Paint small dots of light-brown paint on one of the bun halves for the sesame seeds. Glue the lettuce, tomato and cheese to the inside of the bun, allowing the edges to hang out. Attach the shoulder straps and wear over a brown outfit.

DIY French Fries Costume

Materials Needed:

 Foam pieces:

  • 2 36-inch squares of ½-inch foam (for the box)
  • 10 to 15 3-inch by 24-inch pieces of 3-inch foam (for fries)
✔ Spray paint: Golden brown (for fries) & red (for box)
    ✔ Contact cement (for gluing)
✔ 1 yard of 1 ½-inch wide cotton webbing (for shoulder straps)
✔ Red sweat suit, or tights & leotard (to wear underneath)

Add 12 inches to the wearer’s shoulder width and 8 inches to the hip width. Cut two pieces of foam, the length of the torso and tapered from the shoulders to the hips. Paint the box red and the fries golden brown. Glue the fries to the insides of the box, staggering their heights. Attach the shoulder straps and wear over a red outfit.
