Still not sure of what you want to be for Halloween? Here is a great way of transforming your own face into a Halloween mask. It’s fun to put on and easy remove with water–and it uses items most people already have around the house.

GHOULISH MAKEUP

Use fake fur, cereal, or feathers for ghastly special effects.

  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • ¾ cup white corn syrup
  • ¾ cup water
  • Food coloring
  • 20 sheets (2-ply) facial tissue
  • Paintbrushes
  • Fake fur, feathers, elastic, cereal

Mix the cornstarch and flour together. Gradually stir in the corn syrup and water and mix until smooth. Divide the mixture into small bowls or paper cups and add different food colorings to each batch of makeup. Leave one batch white for the base coat.
Separate the sheets of facial tissue and tear them into 2-inch strips. Make sure that you have a good supply ready to apply quickly. Dip a small paintbrush into the white base and apply to the forehead. Put the tissue strips over the base coat and paint again. Repeat this process until you have covered all areas, except the area near the eyes.
Let the makeup dry for 15 to 30 minutes, then begin applying the colored makeup to desired areas. Several coats will intensify the color. By building up tissue strips, you can make cuts and scars.
To make a werewolf that looks as if hair is really growing right out of its skin, use small pieces of fake fur. Dip the ends into the makeup and apply the fur to the outside edge of the face, working in toward the nose. Apply several layers of fur to get a hairy look. Paint the nose with black or brown makeup.
For a bird disguise, use small feathers that can be found at craft stores. Dip the ends of the feathers into the makeup and apply them to the face, starting on the outer edge and working in. Add a beak made from paper or felt. Attach elastic and tie it at the back of the head.
For a bumpy texture, mix different kinds of cereal in colored makeup and apply to the face. This makes a great dinosaur.
To remove makeup, splash the face with warm water and begin peeling off the layers. Rinse the face again with warm water and pat dry. Use a moisturizer afterward if your face feels dry. Dispose of makeup and tissue in the trash, not down the drain.
