A Desert Moment I’ll Never Forget
One of the most unforgettable views in the American Southwest is right here at Glen Canyon Dam. I stood on the edge, looking down the massive curve of concrete, and all I could think was—how did they ever build something this grand in the middle of such raw, rugged beauty?
The Glen Canyon Dam holds back the mighty Colorado River and creates Lake Powell, one of the largest reservoirs in the country. I took this photo on a crisp, clear day when the desert colors were just glowing. The deep turquoise water, the red rock cliffs, the shadow cast by the dam—it all came together in this one moment.
But what I loved most was the contrast. On one side, you have the wild, untamed canyon country. On the other, a towering wall of concrete built to harness the river. It’s a symbol of human determination—and also a place where you can feel the power of nature all around you.
If you’re ever near Page, Arizona, take the time to stop and see this. Better yet, take the dam tour. You’ll go down inside and hear stories of how it was built, and if you’re like me, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the men and women who dreamed it and made it happen.
