Roasted Garlic on French Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 garlic head
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced

Few things are as soul-satisfying as warm, crusty French bread slathered with buttery-soft roasted garlic. Whether you’re serving it as an appetizer, side dish, or savory snack around the campfire or oven, this recipe is simple, flavorful, and always a hit.

Cooking Steps

  • 1
    Prep the Garlic:
  • 2
Slice off the top of the garlic head to expose the tops of all the cloves. Brush the cut tops with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • 3
    Roast the Garlic (Oven Method):
  • 4
Wrap the garlic head in foil or place it in a ceramic garlic baker. Bake at 275°F for 1 hour. Remove from oven, brush again with olive oil, and roast for another 30 to 60 minutes. The cloves should be soft and pop out easily when squeezed.
  • 5
    Microwave Variation:
  • 6
Place prepared garlic in a ceramic garlic baker and microwave on high for 2–3 minutes until soft.
  • 7
    Serve:
  • 8
Squeeze the softened garlic onto slices of French bread and spread it like butter. Sprinkle with additional salt and pepper if desired.

Variation:

Warm the French bread before or after spreading the garlic. Wrap in foil and place above hot coals or in a closed grill for 20–30 minutes for that fresh-baked flavor and toasty crust.

Serving Ideas:

  • Pair with grilled meats or kabobs for a hearty campfire meal.

  • Serve with cheese and olives for a rustic appetizer board.

  • Use as the base for a savory open-faced sandwich with tomatoes or roasted veggies.

Campfire Tip:

Roast garlic ahead of time and bring it along in a sealed container to spread fresh on bread at the grill or campsite. You can even warm the bread over your fire for that rustic, smoky finish.

Roasted garlic on French bread is more than a snack—it’s an experience. With its rich, mellow flavor and simple ingredients, this recipe is a must-have in your fire-side or kitchen repertoire.
