Visiting San Diego offers no shortage of attractions, but one gem that deserves a full day of exploration is the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. Nestled just north of the city, this garden is more than just a collection of plants—it’s a living museum where nature, culture, and serenity come together.

First Impressions: A Tram Ride Through Paradise

Upon entering, I hopped on the garden tram, curious to get a lay of the land. The ride wound through a variety of landscapes, each one more intriguing than the last. I went around twice—once to enjoy the scenery, and the second time to plan where I wanted to wander on foot. The tram gave me a sense of the garden’s scale, but stepping off is where the magic truly began.

A Journey Around the World

The San Diego Botanic Garden feels like a passport without the plane ticket. Each section transports you to a new corner of the globe:

  •  Africa: Lush greenery and striking plants you won’t see every day.

  •  New Zealand: Unique ferns and exotic flora that feel otherworldly.

  •  Australia: Eucalyptus and bold native plants thriving in the California sun.

Every path led to something new—whether unusual leaves, fragrant blossoms, or vibrant plant textures.

Unexpected Encounters with Wildlife

While wandering, I stumbled across two wild rabbits. One quietly nibbled grass in the shade, while the other stood watch among the mulch. These unplanned encounters gave the gardens an extra layer of life, reminding me that this isn’t just a display—it’s a sanctuary.

The California Poppy & A Busy Bumblebee

Perhaps my favorite moment came when I noticed a California poppy glowing golden in the sunlight. A plump bumblebee buzzed happily from petal to petal, gathering nectar. It was a beautiful reminder that these gardens are just as vital for pollinators as they are for people.

Why You Should Visit

If you’re planning a trip to Southern California, set aside a day for the San Diego Botanic Garden. Whether you enjoy a tram ride or prefer to wander the pathways, you’ll find peace, inspiration, and natural beauty at every turn. And who knows—you might even share the day with a rabbit or a bee.
