A tie for ‘hisss’ special day
Slithery gift may make Dad choke up — with laughter
Snakes have had, fairly or unfairly — you choose — a bad “rep” ever since Day One. A despicable person is a snake-in-the-grass, and horror shows wouldn’t be nearly as scary without a few of them slithering toward the good guys.
Show Dad your new enlightened awareness of snakes with this snake tie for Father’s Day. It’s guaranteed to get laughs for the brave wearer and congratulations for the clever designer.
FATHER’S DAY SNAKE TIE
Materials Needed:
- Old necktie (preferably not too thin)
- Scissors
- Green felt (8 1/2″ x 11″)
- Needle and thread
- Cotton balls
- Craft glue
- Small wiggly craft eyes
- Grosgrain ribbon
- Red felt
- Velcro (3″ x 1″)
- “Eggs” (M&Ms, jelly beans, or other small candies)
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Prepare the Tie
- Cut the large end off an old necktie, forming a squared end for a snake’s head.
-
Make the Snake’s Head
- Draw and cut out four snake head shapes from green felt.
- Stitch two heads together using a running stitch along the edges.
- Glue the heads onto the squared end of the tie.
- Stuff the remaining two heads with cotton balls and sew closed.
-
Add Details to the Snake Head
- Glue wiggly eyes on top of the stuffed head.
- Attach a bow made of grosgrain ribbon where the snake’s head meets the tie.
- Cut a forked tongue from red felt and glue it to the snake’s head.
-
Create the Mouth for the Candy
- Attach small pieces of Velcro inside the head to keep the snake’s mouth closed and hold the candy inside.
-
Fill with Dad’s Favorite “Eggs”
- Stitch along the width of the tie about 12″ from the snake head and fill with candy “eggs” like M&Ms or jelly beans.
