This is one of my all-time favorite cakes. It is a cake you can use for a patriotic time or as a basic cake for any party. You can frost it with a can of pie cherries and you don’t even have to mix up icing. It is a delightful cake that when used with candles, sparklers, dry ice and flags is dazzling. I find kids love this cake. It is a spectacular production.

Get ready for the “oooh’s” and “ahhhh’s.”

Star-Spangled Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of chocolate bundt cake mix
  • 1 (29-ounce) can of cherry pie filling
  • 1 small plastic cup
  • 1 pound of dry ice
  • Small tapered candles
  • Tiny flags
  • 1 cup of very hot water

Prepare bundt cake. Spoon the cherry pie filling on the top of the cool bundt cake. Place a small plastic cup in the center of the cake. Fill the cup with pieces of dry ice. Push candles and flags into the cake. Just before serving, light the candles and pour very hot water over the dry ice.

Tips for Using Dry Ice

Make sure that only adults use the dry ice. Dry ice is available in most metropolitan areas in the grocery stores or it can be found in the yellow pages under “ice.” The key to using dry ice is to use very hot water as the ice is so cold that the poured water freezes to it and then it loses its bubbly effect. Add more dry ice and more hot water for a continuous steaming effect.
