Valentine’s Day is not far away, and during the cold winter weather it is nice to have a fun project. Try this cozy heart-shaped quilt.

For those without the time or inclination to applique a quilt, this is an easy way to create an heirloom!

Materials Needed

  • Commercial stencils, stencil paper, or contact paper
  • Glass (from an old picture frame)
  • X-Acto knife or small, sharp scissors
  • Unbleached muslin fabric (prewashed)
  • Acrylic fabric paints
  • Stencil brushes

  •  To make your own stencil, draw the design on stencil paper or contact paper. Put a piece of glass under your project and carefully cut the outlines of the design with the knife or scissors. Lift out the portions you’ll want to stencil.

•  Place the stencil on the muslin and carefully hold in place. If using contact paper, peel off the paper backing and carefully smooth the stencil onto the muslin.

•  Dip the stencil brush into paint and blot. While holding the brush in a vertical position, apply the paint evenly to the exposed areas of the fabric using short strokes. Start each stroke on the stencil and brush paint onto the fabric. Do not add water to the paint or the brush. When all areas are painted, carefully lift off the stencil.

•  When paint is thoroughly dry, spray the fabric with a mixture of one part white vinegar to one part water. Place an ironing cloth or brown paper bag over the design and press with an iron to “set” the design and make it washable.

  •  Piece strips of contrasting fabric to sides of quilt. Quilt or tie as you would any quilt top.
