Have fun dying eggs the way the pioneers did!
- Raw eggs
- Onion skins
- Greens such as carrot tops, celery leaves, parsley, spinach, or dandelion greens
- Thread
Your supermarket produce manager will probably give you a bag full of loose onion skins. Place several handfuls in water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Put in the refrigerator to cool. Wrap the raw eggs in the greens and bind them tightly with thread. Designs will be printed only where the greens are firmly pressed against the eggs.
Could you gently lower the eggs into the cooled onion skin water and bring the water back to a boil? Remove from heat, cover, and let stand for 15 minutes. Learn more helpful tips for cooking hard eggs.
Plunge eggs into cold water until cool enough to handle. Remove threads and leaves. You’ll be delighted to see the exciting designs!
